During the night of May 1, a Russian drone attack once again struck the Ukrainian port city of Odesa. Residential areas in the Khadzhibeyskyi district, port infrastructure in the region, and the area surrounding the Riviera shopping center were targeted. According to the latest reports, at least five people were injured.
The most severe damage was inflicted on residential apartment buildings. Local authorities reported that several multi-story blocks were hit, including a 16-story building where a fire broke out on the roof. Several apartments were completely destroyed. In another high-rise building, flames engulfed the 11th and 12th floors, further complicating the work of rescue teams.
Among those injured is a young woman whose condition is described as moderate; she remains hospitalized. The remaining victims received outpatient medical care. The total number of confirmed injuries rose to five throughout the morning.
A total of 126 firefighters, rescuers, and specialists, along with 28 units of heavy equipment, were deployed to the scene. Emergency and municipal services continue working to mitigate the consequences of the attack and ensure residents’ safety.
Significant attention was also drawn to an incident at the Riviera shopping center, where debris from a downed drone fell onto the premises. A full evacuation of all visitors and employees was carried out immediately. While the debris caused a fire on the roof of the complex, firefighters quickly extinguished it, and fortunately, no casualties were reported at that location.
Meanwhile, social media platforms saw calls for eyewitnesses to submit videos and photographs of the incident to operational bots used for monitoring security threats. Damage to port infrastructure in the region was also confirmed, though authorities are withholding specific details regarding the operational impact for security reasons.
An operational headquarters has been established at the strike site, where affected residents can receive information on emergency assistance, temporary accommodation, and financial support. Representatives of the city administration are already accepting compensation claims through the municipal budget and the national “eRecovery” (єВідновлення) program. Municipal services are also sealing damaged windows and openings in affected buildings with OSB boards to prevent further weather-related damage.
The attack on Odesa serves as yet another reminder that Russian aggression often fails to distinguish between military and civilian targets. Once again, residential neighborhoods, commercial facilities, and critical urban infrastructure have borne the brunt of the strikes.
